...Assimilation...

To assimilate means to adapt or adjust to the same customs and culture as the majority of the people around you. It means to integrate the other people’s cultures into your life. In the play, “A Raisin in the Sun”, Beneatha is worried about assimilating herself. That is why she is so set on becoming a doctor even though nobody thinks she can, because at the time women were really just house wives that looked after their children. I think it shows weakness when she tries to assimilate herself. It makes it seem as if she is ashamed of who she is and what her background says about her and her life.
I see people assimilating around me all the time because I constantly see people changing who they are so that they can “fit in” with the “cool” people. They assimilate by trying to where the same clothes as the people around them or pretending to like the same things as them. I’m sure I sometimes assimilate when it comes to certain things but not when it comes to being popular. I just am myself because I don’t need anyone to tell me how I have to be in order for people to like me. Eric Liu viewed assimilation as way to improve his life and opportunities for a better future, but he also knew that it was hurting his heritage because he knew nothing of his culture other than how to speak his native language and how to make a stir fry.

Family? or Desires?

If someone were to ask me... what comes first your family or your desires? Id tell them without having to think and without hesitation.. My  Family. My family is always going to be there for me, Even at times when i wish they weren't around. My family has been there for me since before i can remember so i wouldn't trow them aside just in order to fulfill one desire, when I'm going to have another one a week later. My family has always supported me in my decisions, and even when my decisions were bad they allowed me to learn from them and then they'd help me fix my mistakes. even though i may not like my family at times, i know that if i ever need something i can ask them or go to them and they will always be willing to help me, no matter what my problem is. It is because of my family that i am the person that i am today and for that i can never repay them, but i can show them that i appreciate what they have done for me by going to school and showing them that i can succeed and go somewhere in life like they want me to. i want to be able to tell my family in eight to ten year, that instead of them doing something for me, i will do something for them.

The American Dream

The American Dream is different for everyone but in general its living a life with opportunities, family, and freedom to do as they please. To me the American Dream is an opportunity for a person to live in the way they picture a perfect life, with a good job and with a family they can depend on.

My American Dream is to be in a position in life where i dont have to worry about anything going on around me; A life where i have a great family, theres no problems going on in my life, and i dont have to stress about providing for those im responsible for. My American Dream does not have to have the coolest cars, or the nicest things. I think as long as my family and i are happy then my dream is already being lived out.
